Never thought I’d find myself ringside at a Sumo training stable (yes, they call their training camps “stables”)… but here I am. Admittedly, I don’t know much about Sumo wrestling but I just got a crash course from a retired champion. Contrary to what I always assumed, sumo wrestlers aren’t just out-of-shape fat guys. This is a serious sport and the training is equally as serious. These men are in amazing shape! When they first start their training their focus is on building muscle, stamina and flexibility. As they become accomplished wrestlers they put on weight simply to gain an advantage over their opponent. These guys literally have thighs of steel, could lift a baby elephant AND can do the splits. I am officially impressed.
