A Tale of Two Wheelchairs

OK, time for me to climb up on my political soapbox…

It’s no secret… I can’t stand Greg Abbott.

For those of you unfamiliar with Texas politics, he’s the current attorney general and the Republican candidate for governor. Our opinions differ on almost every issue: gun rights, abortion, equal pay, taxes, same-sex marriage, education, the environment, deregulation of the oil and gas industries…

A little background info:
In 1984, while jogging, a tree limb fell on Mr. Abbott. This unfortunate accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. (He sued and was awarded a multi-million dollar settlement).

In his current campaign ads Mr. Abbott has been taken every possible opportunity to try to garner public sympathy by exploiting his disability. Wendy Davis, his opponent, responded by creating an ad featuring an empty wheelchair and statements outlining Mr. Abbott’s record of denying claims to other victims of bodily injury.

Senator Davis has received a lot of criticism for this ad… Maybe I’m biased (OK, I am biased), but I don’t see the problem. As my mother used to say, “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander”. If Greg Abbott is set on highlighting the fact that he’s in a wheelchair, why can’t his opponent?

Below are the ads… you be the judge…
